Wisdom Tooth Extraction Edmonton
What Are Wisdom Teeth?
Wisdom teeth are the third set of molars that develop at the very back of your mouth. They usually appear between the ages of 17 and 25.
These teeth are also called third molars. In many cases, there is not enough room in the jaw for them to grow properly. When this happens, the teeth can become impacted, meaning they remain partially or completely trapped beneath the gum or bone.
Impacted wisdom teeth may lead to pain, swelling, infection, and pressure on nearby teeth. In some cases, they can also damage surrounding teeth or cause gum problems.
When Is the Best Time to Remove Wisdom Teeth?
Your dentist may recommend removing wisdom teeth if there is not enough room for them to grow properly.
X-rays allow your dentist to see how your wisdom teeth are developing. If they are growing at an angle or pushing against nearby teeth, removal may help prevent pain, infection, and damage to surrounding teeth.
Age can also play a role in timing. Wisdom teeth are often easier to remove before the roots fully develop, but the best timing depends on your individual situation.
Some people may not notice their wisdom teeth until they begin to experience symptoms such as swelling, discomfort, or pressure in the back of the mouth.
Do All Wisdom Teeth Need to Be Removed?
Not all wisdom teeth need to be extracted. It depends on the health and position of each tooth.
Wisdom teeth may not need removal if they are:
Healthy
The tooth is free of decay, infection, or gum disease.
Fully erupted
The tooth has grown in completely above the gum line.
Properly positioned
The tooth lines up correctly with the opposing tooth and does not crowd nearby teeth.
Easy to clean
The tooth can be brushed and flossed properly during normal oral hygiene.
