Dental Fillings Edmonton
Dental Fillings in Edmonton
Dental fillings are a routine therapeutic procedure used to restore lost tooth structure caused by localized active decay, structural cracks, or minor chronic wear. Modern advancements in dental materials allow for restorations that closely replicate both the natural look and functional strength of your original teeth.
Tooth-Coloured Composite Restorations
At Cosmic Dental, we utilize modern, mercury-free composite fillings instead of traditional silver amalgams. These materials consist of a durable mixture of plastics and silica bypasses that offer significant clinical and aesthetic benefits.
- Direct Enamel Bonding: Chemical bonding properties allow the resin to link directly to your tooth structure, reinforcing its overall integrity.
- Conservative Preparation: Requires significantly less removal of healthy surrounding enamel compared to metal alternatives.
- Seamless Aesthetics: Available in multiple shades to match the precise color, translucency, and texture of your natural teeth.
- Compact Margins: Allows for smaller, more precise restorations that preserve maximum healthy structure.
Procedure Workflow & Advanced Options
Understanding the steps of a standard composite filling and options for more extensive structural loss.
The Dental Filling Process
1. Cavity Preparation
The dentist begins by entirely removing any active bacterial decay and shaping the clean internal walls of the cavity to receive the material.
2. Resin Curation
The pliable composite resin is layered into the space and instantly hardened (cured) using a specialized high-intensity light source.
3. Shaping & Polishing
The final layer is sculpted and polished to adapt smoothly to the natural anatomy of your bite, leaving a completely seamless margin.
Inlays and Onlays
In cases where the decayed area is too large to be safely supported by a direct composite filling but does not require a full crown, a laboratory-fabricated inlay or onlay (partial crown) is recommended.
This custom procedure replaces extensive tooth structure via a multi-step process. A precise impression is captured at our clinic, and the final restoration is custom-molded from highly durable porcelain in an offsite laboratory. It is then permanently bonded in place during your second visit.
Long-Term Maintenance & Longevity
Dental fillings are constantly subjected to heavy, daily chewing forces and are not designed to last indefinitely. Over time, margins can gradually wear down, micro-leak, or form minor cracks from stress.
Dr. Gagan Aujla monitors the structural integrity of your pre-existing dental work during routine oral exams. Catching material degradation early allows us to proactively replace restorations before secondary bacterial decay can compromise the underlying nerve.
