Dental Crowns in Edmonton
A dental crown is a custom-made restoration designed to fit over an injured, discolored, or cracked tooth. Frequently referred to as a "cap," a crown shields the remaining healthy tooth structure from further fracture while restoring its original shape, alignment, and white appearance.
The Role of a Dental Crown
When a significant portion of a tooth's natural structure is missing due to extensive decay or a severe physical break, standard direct fillings are no longer adequate to support normal chewing forces.
Custom-fabricated from high-grade porcelain or noble alloys, dental crowns fit securely down to the gumline, returning the durable strength needed for comfortable, daily oral function.
When Is a Crown Indicated?
- A large, pre-existing dental filling has cracked, broken, or failed completely.
- Advanced decay has compromised too much of the natural tooth structure.
- The tooth exhibits severe localized sensitivity or extensive structural cracking.
- Reinforced physical protection is required following root canal therapy.
- Cosmetic enhancements are necessary to mask deep, intrinsic enamel discoloration.
The Dental Crown Process
Achieving a seamless, custom fit requires two primary clinical visits to ensure maximum longevity and bite harmony.
Appointment 1: Preparation & Diagnostics
During your initial visit, Dr. Gagan Aujla carefully shapes and reduces the tooth structure to create proper uniform clearance for the crown material.
An accurate physical or digital impression is captured and sent directly to an offsite dental laboratory for fabrication. A temporary crown is then placed over the prepared structure to preserve its position and protect the underlying nerve.
Appointment 2: Final Delivery & Curation
Once your custom permanent crown is meticulously crafted by the dental lab, you will return to our clinic for the final try-in.
The dentist evaluates the restoration for optimal margin accuracy, proper contact tightness with adjacent teeth, and perfect bite alignment. After passing all clinical checks, the crown is permanently cemented into place, blending seamlessly with your surrounding all-white smile.
